Finding Personal Freedom

If someone were to ask you 'what is it you want most in life?' - what would your answer be?

Happiness? Health? Wealth? Opportunity? Think about it. What is it you desire most? I have given it a lot of thought recently and have come to the conclusion that all of the above, and so much more is possible, with one simple thing. Freedom.

Freedom. That's what I want from life. Freedom to love who I want to love, freedom to do the things I love doing most, freedom to travel, freedom to be exactly who it is I want to be. I want to be free from negativity, jealousy, hurt, anger, grief. To me, being free, is the greatest thing life has to offer.

A few months back I brought a book by Don Miguel Ruiz called 'The Four Agreements'. This book explains how we need to reprogram ourselves to live a free life. Read more about it on my post 'A Little Book To Live By ~ The Four Agreements'

This book has inspired me to set out on my own journey to find personal freedom.
These are the steps I have taken so far:

Ditching The Negatives
So far I have begun by ditching the negatives in life. The people that bring me down, the ones who try to belittle me. Life is too short to have to live with people like that. You want to be surrounded by those you are going to lift you up, not those trying to tear you down.
A Career Change
I'm not going to bother sugar coating it. My job - is not for me. It doesn't appeal to my interests, it's something I have never ever had any interest in what so ever. However, despite all this - I have come out knowing a lot.
But I have realised that I don't want to be stuck in a beauty salon all my life.. I mean hell, I couldn't think of anything worse. I want to be a teacher. An English teacher. So my journey begins in September, at University.
Spending Time With Those I Love
My family, friends & my boyfriend. It's so important to spend time with your nearest and dearest. We aren't on this earth forever. We gotta cherish each other.
Planning Ahead
Its so important to live in the moment. But I think it's also important to have a goal. I have a bucket list, and I also have an idea of where I would eventually like to end up. One of my favourite quotes is 'Life's not about the destination, its about the journey'. Holidays, festivals, parties, family time, movie days - fill your journey with happiness and loved ones, don't focus too much on the far future. Decorate what's in front of you. It will leave you with the most beautiful canvas by the time you reach your destination.
No Regrets
Regret nothing. Every lesson is lesson learnt. Find the positive outcomes in a sticky situation. And move on. That's it. Don't dwell on it for years to come. You cant change it. Look at tomorrow as a new day and be the better person you know you can be.
Being My Own Person
There is no point following the crowd. You can't please everyone, so you may as well just be yourself. After spending years trying to 'fit in' and constantly being put down. I began to walk in my own shoes, and it made a huge difference. New circles of friends, new interests, happiness, the lot. Always be your own person. Always.
Be Kind
You may have had a bad day. But it wasn't the checkout girls fault, or the waiters fault, or the salesman's fault... So don't let them catch the end of it. Be kind to everyone. You don't know what others may be going through. Kindness goes a long way, and makes you feel so much better. Bitterness and anger uses up a lot of energy. Be the ray of sunshine everyone wants to see, not the raincloud!
Appreciate what you have. The saying 'you don't know what you've got till its gone' is only too true. Stop wishing for more, and love what it is you already have.
This is a tricky one. In today's society, if you find self-love, you are mocked for being 'vain', 'in-love with yourself' ect.ect. This is such rubbish. To be at peace with yourself is a huge part of personal freedom. If you release yourself from your own negativity, you are giving yourself the opportunity to be the best you can be.

These are just a few of the baby steps I have taken to begin the journey of personal freedom. I have a long way to go, there's no denying it. Life is short, it should be filled with wonders, happiness and passion. We must all begin somewhere.

Follow Me On

  1. Ah great post Katie! Congratulations on going to Uni in September to do something you truly want to do! I have been to college for 3 different things before I realized none of it was what was going to make me happy and none of it was what I really wanted to focus on. It's liberating going for what will make you happy. I really love what you've written. Ditching the negative, being kind - appreciative. You feel so much better with everything. I really enjoyed this post and I can't wait to read follow ups in the future! Well done :)

    1. Thanks Jay! What did you finally settle on in the end? I'm so excited, I've been so stuck for so long! And finally I'm moving forward, words cant even begin to explain how amazing it is!
